Bio
Professor Carl K. Turpin has over 40 years of experience handling labor and employment matters representing both management and labor. In April 2019, Mr. Turpin retired from the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) as a Supervisor of the Labor and Employment Unit Office of the General Counsel. He then started an alternative dispute resolution practice as an arbitrator, hearing officer, employment investigator and mediator.
Prior to attending law school, Professor Turpin was a union official for the United Steel Workers of America, Local 1033 (1977-1985). After law school, Professor Turpin was employed as a lawyer for the Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation (1987-1990), where he was also a leader of the Cook County Legal Workers Union and Regional Director of the Legal Workers’ Union, UAW, Local 65. Professor Turpin was also an attorney for the Chicago Board of Education (1990-1992) and a Senior Association for the Greene and Letts Law Office in Chicago, Illinois (1992-2012),
As an arbitrator and mediator, Professor Turpin has presided over labor and employment disputes, consumer litigation and matters pertaining to special education students. Professor Turpin is a member of several alternative dispute resolution panels: FINRA Arbitrator Panel; District of Columbia Bar’s Attorney/Client Arbitration Board (ACAB); Â鶹´«Ã½ Arbitration Association Labor Panel, Employment Panel and Consumer Panel; Labor and Employment Hearing Officer for the District of Columbia Public Schools; National Bar Association – Alternative Dispute Resolution Certified Mediator and Arbitrator; Global Panel of Distinguished Neutrals (CPR) Employment Arbitration Panel.
Professor Turpin has held many leadership roles. In 1987-1988, he served as President of the Cook County Bar Association. He was Regional Director of the National Bar Association (NBA) (2016-2018). Professor Turpin was Chairperson of the NBA Legal Education Committee for several bar years.
Professor Turpin has been recognized for his contribution to the legal community. In 2012, Professor Turpin was awarded the Cook County Bar Association Don Hubert Award for Advancement of Legal Ethics. In 2023, Professor Turpin was inducted into the Washington Bar Association Hall of Fame. Professor Turpin has been awarded the President’s Awards for outstanding legal service from the Cook County Bar Association, National Bar Association, and Washington Bar Association.
