Michelle Egan, Contestation and Polarization in Global Governance

Michelle EganWhile Europe has remained largely unified in support of Ukraine since Russia’s invasion last year, it continues to face difficult governance issues in the face of such challenges to the established international liberal order.

Co-edited by SIS Professor Michelle Egan, Contestation and Polarization in Global Governance: European Responses analyzes this change in the world order, highlighting how Europe (and the European Union in particular) has dealt with the limits of the rules-based liberal order across different issue areas.

Throughout the 21 chapters, leading scholars examine how Europe navigates a system characterized by a growing deadlock in major international institutions and a lack of compliance with international rules on global governance. Challenges explored include populist-nationalist movements; rising geopolitical tensions; and growing inequality, political polarization and diminishing trust in political institutions.

SIS professors Doga Ulas Eralp, Tamar Gutner, and Miles Kahler all contributed chapters to the book: in Chapter 1, Professor Kahler explores whether the Bretton Woods era of global governance has come to an end; in Chapter 5, Professor Gutner discusses the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank; and in Chapter 18, Professor Eralp writes on the EU's role in the climate change era in bringing China and the U.S. together.

Contestation and Polarization in Global Governance: European Responses was published in 2023 by Edward Elgar Publishing. For more information, click .
