Apply to be a Peer Tutor!

Tutors provide academic support in over 30 courses and coaching on skills for thriving in the classroom and beyond. Tutors are trained in helping students to master challenging course content and hone strategies for academic success, and in meeting the diverse needs of AU students.

Position options:

  1. Peer-Assisted Student Support (PASS) Program Tutors support high-demand undergraduate and graduate courses in both one-on-one and drop-in formats.
  2. Science Hours Tutors support STEM courses (Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience, and Physics) in drop-in, in-person tutoring in the Hall of Sciences, Room 113 on Wednesdays from 3:00-5:00 pm.
  3. Student-Athlete Support Program (SASP) tutors are recruited by the Student Academic Services and then hired by SASP. Student-athletes schedule with SASP Tutors based on the Tutor's availability. 

Please note: Peer Tutors can serve in one or more of the above-described roles at once, if their schedules allow.

Pay rate for Peer Tutors:

  • Undergraduate students earn $17.50 per hour.

  • Graduate students earn $18.50 per hour.

Basic requirements for becoming a Peer Tutor 

Peer Tutors must...

  • Be a current AU student.
    • Full-time enrollment as an undergraduate, five-year AU graduate, post-bac, or graduate student.
  • Have earned an A or A- in the course(s) they tutor or in a relevant upper-level course, preferably from AU.
    • Cumulative GPA at or above 3.0, and term GPA at or above 3.0 (GPAs must be maintained from the date of application until the date of separation).
  • Receive a recommendation from an AU faculty member in the field(s) for which they wish to tutor.
  • Be available to work a minimum of 4-6 consecutive hours per week, and
  • Attend the beginning of the semester training and ongoing semester training.

The Application Process

Students interested in tutoring should apply to one or more of the forementioned Student Academic Services program.

There are three steps to apply to become a Peer Tutor:

  1. Complete and submit the online .

  2. Send an updated copy of your unofficial transcript and resume/CV to tutoring@american.edu.

  3.  Send a resume or curriculum vitae to tutoring@american.edu.

  4. Receive one faculty recommendation from the academic discipline in which you are applying to provide the most tutoring support, preferably from the highest-level course completed in the discipline.

Students selected for an interview will be contacted by Tutoring Programs staff.Â
