Biographical Note
Gregg Jones was born on April 13, 1959 and grew up in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. He earned his BA in Journalism at Northeast Louisiana University where he wrote for Pow Wow, the school newspaper. Jones began his reporting career in 1981 at the Roanoke Times and World-News. In 1982, he joined the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as a staff writer until he moved to the Philippines in 1984 and began freelancing for major British and United States newspapers, covering the 1986 presidential election, the People Power Revolution, and Corazon Aquino's presidency. In 1988 to 1989, he interviewed New People's Army guerillas for his book, Red Revolution, and soon after left the Philippines. He reported for the Washington Post in Mexico (1989 - 1990) and then moved to the United States to write for the Arkansas Gazette (1990 - 1991) and the Dallas Morning News (1992 - 1997). He later moved to Bangkok as head of Dallas Morning News Asia Bureau (1997 - 2002). He returned to the United States to work for the Los Angeles Times (2002 - 2004) and covered the California recall election. He rejoined the Dallas Morning News as an investigative reporter and projects writer (2004 - 2010) and left in 2010 to become a full-time author. Jones has been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and selected as a Fellow for the Black Mountain Institute at the University of Nevada.
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains Gregg Jones articles, book proposals, correspondence, interviews, manuscripts, notes, and radio broadcasts documenting his work as a journalist and author in the Philippines, the Asia-Pacific region, the United States and Mexico. Featured topics in the collection include: the California recall campaign, the New People's Army of the Communist Party of Philippines, the Philippine-Â鶹´«Ã½ War, Philippine politics, rural health conditions in Arkansas, and the abuse of steroids. This collection also contains a subject file with background articles, maps, and other publications that Jones collected as part of his research. Of note are Mao Zedong and People Power Revolution memorabilia. Many of the audio recordings are in Filipino (Tagalog).

This series consists of articles (1986 - 2002), correspondence (1984 - 1986), interviews (1984 - 1991), notebooks (1984 - 2002), and radio broadcasts (1986 - 1987) from when Gregg Jones did freelance work in the Philippines. He submitted most of his articles to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (1984 - 1988) and the Dallas Morning News (1984 - 2002). Jones calls his articles "stories." A large number of radio broadcasts are in Filipino (Tagalog). This series is arranged alphabetically.

This series consists of memorabilia that Gregg Jones collected during his reporting. There is Mao Zedong memorabilia from when he visited China (1997 - 2001), including a Chairman Mao snow globe, bust, pins, necklaces, and a Red Guard alarm clock. There are T-shirts, buttons and other commemorative material from the Philippines 1986 election and consequent People Power Revolution, as well as bumper stickers and a small doll from Rene Saguisag's campaign for the Philippines Senate. There is a necklace of boar's teeth from a Waorani tribe in Ecuador, and T-shirts regarding President Suharto's questionable wealth and Macau reverting back to Chinese rule. There are also items related to Jones's career, including a pin from when Jones reported for Dallas Morning News and a Los Angeles Times t-shirt.
