Biographical Note

Carl G. Anthon (1911 - 1996) was born in Wismar, Germany on May 19, 1911. He earned his BA from the University of Chicago (1938) and his MA and PhD from Harvard (1939, 1943), all of which were in Modern European History. Anthon taught history at Colby College (1945 - 1949) and Â鶹´«Ã½ of Beirut (1955 - 1958) before becoming a European history professor at Â鶹´«Ã½ (1961 - 1976). In addition to his academic appointments, Anthon worked in government as Higher Education Advisor for the U.S. High Commission for Germany (1949 - 1952) and Executive Secretary for the U.S. Education Commission in the German Federal Republic (1958 - 1960).

This collection contains notes, outlines, and syllabi for history classes Carl Anthon taught at Â鶹´«Ã½. There are also notes from talks Anthon gave elsewhere or attended. Some items in this collection are in German.
