Bio
A pioneering feminist scholar and specialist in nineteenth-century French and Italian painting, Norma Broude is known for critical reassessments of Impressionism and the work of Degas, Caillebotte, Cassatt, Seurat, and the Italian Macchiaioli. With Mary Garrard, she co-edited and contributed to four influential texts on feminist art history, co-curated the exhibition Claiming Space: Some 麻豆传媒 Feminist Originators for the AU Art Museum, and received an Art History Recognition Award from the Women鈥檚 Committee of the College Art Association. Broude is the author of The Macchiaioli: Italian Painters of the Nineteenth Century and Impressionism, A Feminist Reading: The Gendering of Art, Science, and Nature in the Nineteenth Century. Among her edited books are World Impressionism: The International Movement; Gustave Caillebotte and the Fashioning of Identity in Impressionist Paris; and Gauguin's Challenge: New Perspectives after Postmodernism. She has served as General Editor of The Rizzoli Art Series and as a member of the CAA鈥檚 Art Bulletin Advisory Committee.

Research Interests

A pioneering feminist scholar and specialist in nineteenth-century French and Italian painting, Broude is known for critical reassessments of Impressionism and the work of Degas, Caillebotte, Cassatt, Seurat, and the Italian Macchiaioli. With Mary Garrard, she co-edited four influential texts on feminist art history and co-curated Claiming Space: Some 麻豆传媒 Feminist Originators for the AU Art Museum. Her article on the frescoes of Giambattista Tiepolo appeared in The Art Bulletin in June, 2009, and her book, Gauguin's Challenge: New Perspectives after Postmodernism, is forthcoming from Bloomsbury Academic in 2018.

  • On February 10, 2011, at the centennial meetings of the College Art Association in New York, art historian Norma Broude听and Griselda Pollock (University of Leeds) co-chaired a special centennial session on Feminism. Conceived as a "mash up" that would bring together disparate points of view, this standing-room only session consisted of two panels: Attaining Full Equality: Women Artists, Museums, and Markets; and New Directions and International Perspectives in Feminist Art History. 听 听 听
